A strong sports program attracts kids to this inner-city summer camp. After that, they move on to reading, computers ...

Driving around Richmond, California, outside of San Francisco, we pass a group of 10 year-olds hanging out in the street.

Leland Johnson, Director of the Coronado Community YMCA, pulls over to talk with one boy he recognizes from last year's summer camp. As the boy explains to Leland, this year his mom can't afford to send him to camp. So Leland is quick to offer a solution.

"Get her to come down and sign you up," he says. "We'll see if we can do it for half price."

The YMCA's summer camp is designed to fulfill the mission of the Coronado YMCA: to empower the community to build a healthy and safe neighborhood. It's just the kind of program that the UPS Olympic Sports Legacy (OSL) program is designed to help.

In fact, since 1998 the UPS OSL program has donated more than 600,000 pieces of new sports equipment to youth organizations in 34 cities around the world. This year alone we will deliver over $1.5 million in new sports equipment to 20 cities in seven countries.

In the hot city streets of Richmond, the YMCA summer camp offers new programs and expanded programs to those kids who would otherwise have very little to do.

As Leland says, "Having good sports equipment is the hook for most kids. And when more kids join the program, it gives us more leverage to help the kids, to kids get off the street and into camp."

So far his mission is working. This summer the camp's enrollment is over 100 kids, up from 62 the previous summer.
